How to have a stress free Holiday Season

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, according to Andy Williams, but for many of us, Christmas and the Holiday Season can be a particularly stressful time. Whether it is managing the finances in response to the ever growing present list, or in anticipation of the inevitable tension when the family come to visit, the experience can be anything but relaxing. And when it comes to overspending on our children, not to mention where to hide the number of presents we accumulate, 60% of parents when asked admitted to significant levels of festive stress.

So, if you are starting to feel overwhelmed already, what can you do to enjoy a stress free Holiday Season?

7 Stress Free Holiday Season Tips

1. Don’t Let The Exercise Routine Slip:

Research has shown that if you exercise regularly you are less likely to experience anxiety than those who don't exercise. Keep active over the holiday period, either with a pre lunch run or a simple home exercise routine.

2. Add these aromatherapy scents to your home:

Here are five of the best scents to help improve your mood during all the  festivities:

  • Lavender
  • Sandalwood
  • Vetiver
  • Bergamot
  • Frankincense

Aromatherapy scents can help improve your mood

3. Monitor your Caffeine intake:

Studies have shown that high doses of caffeine can contribute to stress and anxiety. There may be a lot of temptation but try to make your last caffeinated beverage 8 hours before you go to bed, to avoid a build up in your body and a restless night.

4. Be Grateful:

Keeping a gratitude journal of the positive things in your life can work wonders with lowering your stress and anxiety. There is no better time to do this than over Christmas; take the time to slow down and fully appreciate the things you are grateful for.

5. Socialise:

This one is not so difficult to achieve at this time of year, and you may already be able to tick it off the list. But if you are feeling lonely, even if you don’t feel up to it, you could volunteer to help others in need and substantially reduce your stress in the process.

6. Say No:

If we feel in control of what we are doing, our anxiety and stress levels are much lower. Do not underestimate the power of saying no to the things you don’t really want to do, whether it is being seated next to the in-laws during Chrisatmas lunch, or that New Year's eve party that you really don’t want to attend.

7. Listen to Calming Music:

Slow paced, instrumental music can be particularly effective at helping to calm a busy mind. Find a Christmas piece you really enjoy, sit back and relax.
