Is stress strangling your potential? If we were to be so bold as to predict, we would say it probably is. Why are we so sure? We’ve studied the latest research, and this highlights some alarming statistics about our stress in the UK.
Commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation and undertaken by YouGov, a 2018 study polled 4,169 UK adults and concluded that over the past year, almost three quarters (74%) have at some point felt so stressed that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. These findings have been backed up by other recent research. Stress is increasingly affecting younger age groups too, particularly those between the age of 18-34.
The negative effects of stress on our health are far reaching and well documented, from stomach ulcers to depression with much in between. One such example was demonstrated by the INTERHEART study, which was conducted across 52 countries. It found that prolonged stress increased the chances of having heart attack by as much as smoking and hypertension. Scary stuff.
